Muslim Fashion Trend

Fashion is a way to say who you are without having to speak. Fashion is something that exists in the latest trends of clothes, bags, shoes, and accessories to make our appearance attractive. Some people say that shouldn’t judge the book from the cover, but we must pay attention to the cover; that’s why we need fashion. Fashion is always developing every year and gives a new update to make a sense of style. And now there are many muslim women wearing hijab to cover their awrah. But now muslim women want to be looking stylish with their hijab. Muslim fashion in Indonesia now becomes a trendsetter and is making a comeback as a new era in fashion trend.

Nowadays, muslim women are wearing hijab. Hijab is not only wear as an obligation but now as a need of daily fashion. Hijab is a part of fashion. Fashion is an art to express yourself from something that you wear. Fashion is always changing, it has the power to transform an image and make a social statement. The progress of fashion industry is always developing every years. The same also happens with hijab trend. Hijab now becomes a fashion trend and has many followers. Hijab is one of the important parts of muslim fashion. Hijab is a veil which covers the head worn by a muslim women beyond the age of puberty in the presence of non mahram (non related) adult males. It covers  head to toe except the faces and palms that conforms to a certain standard of modesty. Most often , it is worn by muslim women as a symbol of modesty, privacy, and morality. Hijab is an obligation for every muslim women. According to the Qur’an An-nur 31 and Al-ahzab 59. Now there are so many muslim women wearing hijab, especially in Indonesia as the largest muslim population in the world. As we know, Paris, London, Milan, and New York, are the principal fashion capitals in the world, but when it comes to  muslim fashion, though, Jakarta-Indonesia, has a lot going for it. The country’s rising midle class has fueled a boom in the domestic fashion Industry. The way they dress as a muslims is dynamic and stylish. Being a muslim women doesn’t mean you cannot wear fashionable clothes. As we know, Indonesian hijabs are the most stylish of all. Indonesian women combine various motifs, colors, and styles in their chic hijabs. Many of the young women wearing hijab are fashion forward and technology savvy. They take pictures of themselves wearing hijab and upload image onto social media like Facebook, Twitter, Path, Instagram, and so on. And then it makes many people see a unique style of hijab on the internet and decides to follow them. That show us that we don’t need to separate our religious beliefs from the passion we have, for fashion and lifestyle. Islam has taught us to put faith in everything we do, this is the start of a very positive movement of Indonesian muslim fashion. And maybe Indonesia is becoming mecca for muslim international fashion trends.

Hijabers community was founded on November, 27, 2010,  in Jakarta, Indonesia. Around 30 women, from different background and profession were gatered together. But most of them are young designer, like Jenahara, Ghaida Tsurayya, Dian Pelangi, Ria Miranda, and many more. They shared visions to form the community that Allah willing will accomodate events related to hijab and muslim women. From fashion to Islamic studies, from hijab style to learning Islam, that will make us a better Muslim woman. And it is the hope of the community that, every Muslim woman can meet new friends, get to know each other, and learn from each other. Hijabers community also become a trendsetter in hijab world. The birth of hijabers community bring many influences to muslim woman who want to look stylish without break the rules. Hijabers community becomes the melting pot for begginers in wearing hijab. There are always negative and positive sides in everything. Although this community are necessary for all muslim women to share anything about hijab and Islam, but some people doesn’t like this community. Islamic fundamentalists  disagree with the community because they think that it can lead Muslim women to wear hijab only for fashion not for God and their assumptions that style of hijabers community is not syar’i, but also can make tabarruj. Tabarruj means displaying a beauty for showing off to a strangers, not for mahram. In my opinion, whether tabbaruj or not  , it depends on each person and that’s a very sensitive thing because only the person and Allah knows if she or he in the state of tabarruj or not. It’s better if we do not judge, because only God can judge and then the motives to wear hijab is a good thing. Everybody needs to learn from the first step when they’re newbies in hijabs world to become a good Muslim women. For me, the phenomenon of hijabers community is a fabulous thing. And  hijabers community gives a birth of new profession in the world of hijabs which is hijab stylist. Like another fashion stylists, hijab stylists also have an obligation for creating a style but this is for hijab only. They created hijab that are more beautiful, fashionable, and out of the box. Indonesia has many talented young hijab stylists. Suchi Utami is one of the most popular hijab stylists. She makes her tutorial hijab video then upload it on You Tube. She reaches more than ten thousand viewers. Now she is known both domestically and abroad. Hijab stylist profession has the potential to make someone famous and reap many benefits. Many muslim magazines, clothing line, and advertising, need professional hijab stylists to dress their models to make hijab that is used in a commercial product more attractive.

Today, progress of muslim fashion industry is growing rapidly. The presence of many innovative young designers make a barometer into muslim fashion developing in this era. This situation is very different than that happens in the 90’s. In the 90’s, there were not many muslim women who wore hijab as right now. Hijab was considered as something strange. Many of the issues raised through the use of hijab at that time, like terrorism, poison spreader, prohibition on wearing hijab in government institution, image of plebeian, old fashioned, and other negative images cames to Muslim women. The style that existed at that time was so standard. Muslim fashion has not resonated like now also the designer is not as many as now. Ida Royani became one of designer well known at that time. The mother of Jenahara Nasution, she changed her profession from movie actress to muslim clothing designer until now. Her design concept is modern clothing which is dominated dark colors such as gray, black, and brown, with variations displayed jacket, and don’t forget the batwing tops as her trademark. The next collection takes inspiration from weaved fabric from East Nusa Tenggara. Orange and red colors make the clothes more colorful, with jackets, pants, skirts, and shawls to complement the look. Ida still succeessful as a designer until now. She  also holds an important role for muslim fashion industry in 90s. She hopes that the return fashion trends this time could bring a positive impact for all. We must grateful because now we can wear our hijab without any fear of threat like on those years. We are supposed to be proud because the developing of muslim fashion now means we can create our style inspired by muslim fashion icons. Indonesia becoming mecca of muslim fashion trend and Allah willing will hold Muslim Fashion Week soon.

# The birth of muslim fashion in Indonesia, gave much influence especially in fashion industry. So, muslim women shouldn’t look awkward with the hijab they’re wearing because now they can look more stylish.
